The Girl Plays Jazz Project is dedicated to supporting and promoting girls and young women in jazz.
We offer one day workshops to introduce girls to jazz, blues, funk, blues and world music improvisation, and to develop girls and young women as jazz musicians.
We invite different top level bands in to host masterclasses for the girls – these have included a Cuban big band workshop led by Sara McGuiness and Jimmy Martinez, a Samba workshop led by the Brazilian drummer Cyro Zuzi, a gypsy jazz day led by La Bouche Manouche featuring Irene Serra. Forthcoming masterclasses including a workshop with the Michele Drees Tap Jam Project in September, with the award winning composer Issie Barratt in November, and a free jazz and improvised music masterclass with Shirley Smart and Charlotte Keeffe.
We also seek our performance and development opportunities for the girls. In March 2019 we were delighted to perform at Ronnie Scott’s. In May we performed at the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development’s Policy Awards. We have several performances at London jazz venues in the pipe-line. We are also planning a visit for the girls to a recording studio so they can experience how it works.
Please see our workshops page for details of our forthcoming courses, or get in touch with us for more info.
