Workshops

 

Girl Plays Jazz Project is delighted to have been awarded a National Lottery Project Grant by the Arts Council – to continue to run our live workshops, masterclasses and development opportunities from 2021 to 2023, as well as our new monthly BIG JAZZ THEORY sessions.  As part of this we will look to expand our programme outside of London for the first time.

 

IN PERSON WORKSHOPS

With the easing of COVID restrictions we are looking forward to resuming our live workshop programme from the end of April 2021.    All our workshops are open to girls aged 8 to 16 who have at least 2 years regular tuition on their instruments.

From September 2021 Girl Plays Jazz Project proudly presents: The Jazz Launch Pad – introducing girls and young women to jazz improvisation with the support of the Arts Council.   All workshops cost £25 per participant, with free places available for those on low incomes.

 

Saturday 9th October 2021 @ 1pm – introduction to jazz improvisation workshop and performance @ The Vortex Jazz Club, Dalston

Sunday 14th November 2021 @ 1pm – introduction to jazz improvisation workshop and performance @ The Old Ford Jazz Club, Victoria Park as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival

Saturday 20th November 2021 @ 10pm – introduction to jazz improvisation workshop and performance @ Karamel, Wood Green as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.

ONLINE WORKSHOP PROGRAMME

BIG JAZZ THEORY!

We are proud to present our new online 2021 BIG JAZZ THEORY workshops for girls aged 8 to 18 – where we dig a little deeper into jazz history, theory, key musicians and listening in a fun and engaging way.  The cost is £20 for four, monthly 1 hour online Zoom sessions, and we will run monthly sessions throughout 2021.  All sessions are at 4pm unless stated.

Meet the band – introducing the rhythm section and front line of a small combo

Sunday 24th October 

The Blues – an introduction to the art form of the Blues and its influence in jazz improvisation.

Sunday 28th November 

History and the Greats of jazz drumming – guest tutor tbc.

Sunder 12th December 

Jazz @ Christmas – a lighthearted listen to favourite jazz Christmas tunes

 

Sunday 23rd January – Chords

Understanding chord and chord symbols in jazz

Sunday 6th March – All about that bass

History and the Greats of the low end – guest tutor tbc.

Sunday 27th March – Piano

History and the Great Jazz Pianists – guest tutor tbc.

Sunday 24th April – Saxophone Colossus 

History and the Great Saxophonists – guest tutor tbc.

Sunday 29th May – Understanding common jazz progressions – chord symbols, cycle of fifths and 2 5 1s

Sunday 19th June – TBC

Sunday 17th July – TBC

 

The cost of our LIVE workshops is £25 to pay for the considerable skill and expertise of our 6 piece house band. Free places are always available for those on low incomes.
