Workshops

Our next one day workshop is on Saturday 22nd September from 1.30 to 4 pm at the New Unity Hall, Upper Street, Islington N1 2TZ.  This costs £35, and we have free places available for low income families.  Please get in touch for more info.

OnDecember 2018 we are very proud to present our first Masterclass – where we invite a top level professional to lead the workshop for girls aged 8 to 12. We are so delighted that the amazing musician and bandleader Sara McGuinness will be leading a Cuban workshop for the girls. No experience in improvisation/Cuban music is necessary.

Sara McGuinness combines a career as a musician and educator. She is an established figure on the UK Latin Music scene, winning the 2018 UK Lukas Award  ‘Musician of the Year’. Her band, Grupo Lokito, the subject of her practice based research into the dynamic relationship between Cuban and Congolese music, won the UK Lukas Award ‘Tropical Act of the Year’ in 2017. She also leads Cuban band Sarabanda and a community based Cuban Big Band Orquesta Estelar. Sara teaches an annual Cuban Music Course in Havana, Cuba and a Cuban Music Summer School in London, and at the London College of Music and the School of Oriental and African Studies

In 2019 we are running an introduction to jazz improvisation workshop on Saturday 19th January.

In February we will run our first South London workshop – details tbc.

On Saturday 16th March, our brilliant Brazilian house drummer Cyro Zuzi will run a samba drumming class for the girls (essential for the girls’ rhythmic ability) – at St Stephen’s Church, Canonbury. Please watch this space for more details.

In April we will run our next masterclass – details tbc.

On 11th May we are delighted the Andy Ruiz Palma and La Bouche Manouche will run a gypsy jazz workshop – all instruments welcome, but this will particularly help our strings players and clarinets find their chops – at St Stephen’s Canonbury.
